RescueRig's Methodology of Instruction

RescueRig strongly believes that the technical rescue technician must train at a substantially higher skill level than what is required to complete an actual rescue.  The technician who routinely trains to a higher level will easily and by design, default to the most straightforward, efficient, and safest technique possible when the real deal happens.

Technical rescue training must be based on emergency potential, and not on call emergency frequency.  It is a total commitment by the individual technician as well as the entire agency.  Technical rescue training is dangerous; the only thing more dangerous is not training.

RescueRig Instructors insist that the students understand why they are using a given technical skill.  In other words – what is the theory behind each action?  When you understand the physics behind a particular technique, then remembering how to do it will become considerably easier and become a lasting part of your rigging/rescue repertoire.  We feel rescue teams should be light, efficient, competent and safe.  Bigger is not usually better.  RescueRig believes that rescue systems should be constructed in accordance to the equipment manufacture’s recommendations and maintain a true 10:1 safety margin based on accurate load calculations.

RescueRig will always support continued research and development on getting best equipment on the market, and on the pursuit of quality training at a significantly higher skill level than what you would expect to use during one of your actual rescues.

The technical rescue technician must be the complete package, highly skilled, physically and mentally fit, and equipped with the best and most appropriate gear available.

RescueRig is committed to excellence.

Classroom Presentation

Approximately 30% of the allotted time of RescueRig Seminars take place in the classroom.

RescueRig employs several different techniques in the classroom including whiteboard analysis, PowerPoint and video presentations, but what sets RescueRig training apart from other schools is our pioneering of creative, interactive tabletop presentations.  We feel tabletop presentations is one of the best ways to maintain the interest of the class while inside.  Most rescue personnel are hands on people and find tabletops to be highly beneficial in understanding the “WHY” of RescueRigging.  At the same time, all tabletops are researched and back up by sound mathematics and physics.

During classroom Segments there will be a heavy focus on knotcraft.  Knotcraft is elemental in the field of technical rescue, and quality knot tying skills will be a key requirement of all participants.

 Field Applications

Typically 70% of the class schedule of Seminars conducted by RescueRig take place in the field; usually a combination of urban/industrial and wilderness.   This training will afford the participants several opportunities to put into practice what was presented in the classroom, including the mastery of more advanced skills that could be called upon during complex rescues,  including advanced anchor considerations, erecting high directional systems, and constructing/operating horizontal rope systems.  All training locations that are selected for field applications will challenge, inspire, and elevate the participants to new heights of confidence in their abilities to safely complete complex technical rescues in a timely fashion.
